Forthcoming Glasgow area parade

Forthcoming parade due to be held on Saturday 21st July, and passing St Alphonsus Church in Glasgow –  Statement from the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland   “We welcome the opportunity to continue positive dialogue with Glasgow City Council, the Police, and other stakeholders regarding future parades.  We should be looking forward, not back, and our lodges today therefore took the decision to postpone the above parade due to take place this Saturday, therefore allowing some additional time over those discussions which would give everyone the opportunity to look at matters from a fresh, forward thinking perspective.  The Grand...

Call me, but I won’t answer…

We’ve read a number of comments recently where it has been suggested to us that we should be talking to the council about our parades. The most vocal of these has come from Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council who decided to talk to us through the medium of a newspaper, rather than with us in a call or meeting. Cllr Aitken suggests that we should be talking to the council and voluntarily re-routing parade routes for upcoming events, and if we fail to do so, then “Glasgow City Council will insist”. We understand why elected politicians need...

Parades issue debated in The Sun

The Orange Order was asked to contribute to a debate taking place in The Sun newspaper regarding our parades.  We were happy to do so and Jim McHarg submitted a piece as did MSP James Dornan.  We welcomed the opportunity to put forward our case, and we appreciate the points put forward by James Dornan who takes a different position to our own. Surely this is the way forward?  A reasoned debate where different views are put forward.  This is a million miles away from many of the articles and online comments that have appeared recently that have focused...

Olympian takes part in 12th July Parade

Tonight the County Flute Band invited Ronan along to parade with the band. He walked with pride with the medals he won at The Special Olympics. Ronan’s mum Katie wrote “With the recent press about bigotry I want people to see the real side of the Orange Order and bands. They don’t care about race, colour or creed and shouldn’t be labelled doing wrong as it’s the blue bag brigade yet again that brings bad press. My son was parading tonight with the County Flute Band wearing his medals he won at the special Olympics. Also parading was the RWDM of Orange and Purple District No.16 Tam Tyrie, the ladies lodge LLOL247 and other brethren within the district. My son was beaming with pride as he got to parade with his hero’s. There was no malace or bigotry as these people are part of a culture that spans for decades and decades. These same people parade with honour, respect and also have a code of conduct that is strict and they don’t tolerate any members breaking these rules. So the next time anyone see’s the people on the side of the road not wearing a collarette or band uniform, take it out on them, not the decent people within bands or under the banner of the Orange Order. it’s not fair and it certinly isn’t right they should be...

Updated statement from the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland regarding St Alphonsus Church

Statement by Jim McHarg, Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland, “I, like so many others, was appalled to hear the reports of the incident that happened outside St Alphonsus Church in Glasgow on Saturday.  Verbal abuse is in itself unacceptable, but allegations of spitting is vile and disgusting, and we hope those involved are brought to justice.  Whilst I am assured that no members of the parade were involved in any of the incidents, we understand that it was carried out by a small group of young men who turned up to watch the parade go...
