Today at the Imperial Orange Council in Edinburgh, it was a full morning of business during which delegates received a comprehensive report on world Orangeism from the Imperial Secretary, Bro Mervyn Bishop. Several notices of motion were debated and the first of the jurisdiction reports were also received.

The afternoon brought a guest speaker, the distinguished author and journalist Ruth Dudley-Edwards, on the theme of “How others see us”. Some years ago Ruth published an intimate portrait of the Orange Order in her book, The Faithful Tribe. Though she would definitely claim to be an admirer of the Order, her brief was to be brutally candid about the Order’s shortcomings.

Following her challenging talk, delegates split into workshop groups for further discussion. Tuesday’s session continued with meetings of the Imperial Council Committees.
