About Us

The Orange Order is the oldest and biggest Protestant fraternity in Scotland. We are an organisation of people bonded together to promote the ideals of our faith.

Now in our third century, we were an established part of Scottish life and culture long before the formation of so many other organisations, like the Labour Party or the SNP.

And since the Orange Order originated in the British Isles, it was no surprise that the founders adopted the name of the British monarch most associated with the early development of freedom and democracy — William III, Prince of Orange.

In Scotland the Order’s annual Boyne Celebrations are this country’s biggest expression of Protestant culture, heritage and freedom.

No other voluntary organisation can match them for colour, music and crowd appeal. But there is far more to the Orange Order than the holding of annual celebrations as we hope you will discover through this website.

Statement of Faith

Five Solas

We believe that there is only one, spiritual Being who is God. Though God is one in essence, He is revealed in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

These three Persons of the Divine Trinity are distinct, yet in all respects co-equal, co-eternal, and co-essential. All of our salvation is according to the will of and accomplished in the power of this Triune God.

We believe that our most gracious God, in harmony with His eternal purpose of love toward His people, sent His only begotten Son into our flesh, so that He became like us in all things, without sin.

Jesus, having assumed our human nature in which sin was committed, satisfied the justice of God with respect to our sin and guilt by his most bitter suffering and death. His perfect death atoned for the sins of all men, thereby reconciling them to God in eternal fellowship and friendship.

This relationship of friendship which God establishes with His people in Christ is His covenant of grace.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, the third Person of the Trinity. We believe that He was sent from the Father by the Son to convict the world of sin and righteousness, to regenerate and indwell those who trust in Christ, to baptise with the very Presence of God, to seal them for the final day of redemption, to guide them into truth, to fill them for a life of holiness and victory and to empower them for witness and service. We believe that He gives spiritual gifts to believers for the proper functioning of the Body of Christ, which is the Church.

We believe that the Bible, consisting of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is the revelation of God to mankind, is fully inspired by Him, is sufficient for the knowledge of God and His will. The Bible is infallible and inerrant in its original manuscripts, and is the supreme and final authority for all Christian faith and conduct.

We believe that humanity was originally created by a definite act of God in His own image and is dependent upon and accountable to his Creator.  Through disobedience, the first man sinned and fell from his original state of moral perfection.

As a consequence, he brought upon himself and upon the whole human race the penalty for sin, which is spiritual and physical death. Since Adam, every person is born with an inherently sinful nature and becomes a sinner in thought, word and deed. Every person, therefore, stands under the just condemnation of God and is unable to save themselves or to present deeds worthy of merit before God.

We believe that the salvation which Christ secured for fallen man on Calvary’s Cross is applied by the Holy Spirit and through the preaching of His Word. The Holy Spirit regenerates men, thereby enabling them by faith to participate in and enjoy eternal fellowship with God and reign with him as His sons and daughters. Thus the believer is brought by the Spirit to a consciousness of his sin and to faith in Jesus Christ as the one and only Saviour. True conversion is called repentance and sincere sorrow of heart for one's sin and a turning from it.

We believe that the one, invisible Church of God consists of all true believers gathered from the beginning to the end of the world, of which Jesus Christ is the Head. This Church is gathered out of all nations, yet is united by the power of the Spirit of Christ in one faith.

This invisible Church manifests itself as the gathering of believers and their children. We believe that is the duty of every believer to unite himself with his children to that congregation which manifests the marks of the true Church of Jesus Christ in the world. These marks are three: the pure preaching of the Word, the proper administration of the sacraments, and the faithful exercise of Christian discipline. The faithful preaching of the gospel is Christ's means, both in the established church and on the mission fields, to gather and sustain His people in the faith.

We believe that although physical death is God's judgment upon sin, the sting of death is gone for the believer and death is the means by which God brings him immediately into conscious glory with Christ in heaven.

The unbelieving and ungodly bear the punishment for their sin not only in this life and in death, but also forever. Christ will come for His church and all will then be judged according to their works and those saved in Christ will be partakers of Christ's life in eternal glory and those that have not believed will receive everlasting and just damnation.

We believe in the personality and depraved character of Satan, who is the great enemy of God and humankind. We believe that he, along with the company of demonic beings serving him, works out his evil plans through the ungodly world system, limited only by the sovereign rule of God. We believe that he was judged by Christ at the cross and will ultimately meet his doom in the lake of fire, where he will remain eternally.
